The Federal Court of Justice and the Public Prosecutor General’s Office were established on 1 October 1950. A series of events is to be held in 2025 to mark their 75th anniversary.

To kick off this anniversary year, the Federal Court of Justice and the Public Prosecutor General’s Office, together with the University of Trier, will host the finals of the annual national Moot Court in Criminal Law in Leipzig. The four best student teams from the preliminary rounds held in Trier will take the roles of public prosecutor and defence counsel and face each other in two simulated criminal law court proceedings. They will be asseded by a jury made up of federal judges sitting on the criminal panels based in Leipzig and a representative of the Public Prosecutor General’s Office. The Moot Court will be held on Friday, 16 May 2025, from 9 am in the Grand Courtroom of the Federal Administrative Court in Leipzig.

On Saturday, 20 September 2025 the Federal Court of Justice will open its doors to allow the general public to take a look behind the scenes. Interested citizens can use the Open Day to explore the grounds of the Federal Court of Justice in Karlsruhe. No prior booking is required. A multi-stage tour provides an opportunity to get to know the tasks and functioning of Germany’s highest civil and criminal court. Visitors will also be able to talk to staff who work on the premises. The Public Prosecutor General’s Office will also be holding an open day on the same day.

The highlight of the anniversary year will be an official ceremony attended by Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier on Thursday, 30 October 2025 in the Badisches Staatstheater in Karlsruhe.

Finally, a commemorative publication will be published to mark the anniversary, with contributions by judges at the Federal Court of Justice, federal public prosecutors and public prosecutors working for the Public Prosecutor General and lawyers admitted to the Bar at the Federal Court of Justice. The academic assistants at the Federal Court of Justice will likewise be compiling a commemorative publication to mark the 75th anniversary.
